Interactive Lesson: Four

Drive Rite: Keys to Smart Driving

Drive Rite - Keys to Smart Driving

Crash Scene Aftermath - Laws and Logistics

Objectives: Youth who complete the lesson can

  • Understand laws dictating driver responsibility following a crash
  • Demonstrate the steps a driver will take following a crash
  • Recognize the potential long-term consequences of a car crash

Activities

  • It's a Legal Matter
Youth learn that there are certain laws governing the actions a driver must take following a crash. Attention to Indiana State Law and expected actions of the driver is reviewed.

  • A Crash Happened, Now What?
In this activity, youth learn responsibilities such as reporting the crash to police and the insurance company, determining damage to the vehicle, arranging for repairs, etc. In this lesson, we want youth to recognize that a crash can lead to serious injury or even death, but there are also many other responsibilities associated with driving a vehicle.

  • And Then There Was Lisa
Youth hear from victims of serious crashes and/or their family and friends. Guest speakers are invited to the class to share their own experiences, and to help youth recognize that there are many people impacted by crashes, and that it can happen to them, too.

    Lessons

Parents are instructed to complete at least one parent lesson prior to the next session.  These lessons allow parents to share personal experiences, learn safe driving skills with their youth, and conduct on-the-road practice sessions with their youth.
