County Template V2.0 Resource Area
FAQ - Improved Create Link Page

We also drastically improved the Create Link page by giving you the option to choose the type of link you wish to create:

  • A link to a Template Page.

  • A link to a File Uploaded through file management.

  • An Internet URL

If you choose one of the first two options, you will be presented with a List from which to choose the file you wish to create a link for.  You no longer have to type in the directory path and file name.

We also continue to add to and improve the resources available to you on the County Template page.   We are working to improve the User Guide and the streaming modules.  Any feedback that you have gladly be accepted at cthelp@agad.purdue.edu

For those of you that have existing sites;  Since a lot of questions have been asked about linking to files that you currently have on you site, I would like to walk through your options.

The first thing that you will need to do is upload your files to the new server using File management.

You should make a local copy of the files that you want to upload from your old site.  Your P:/ drive would be a good place to keep the copies as we go through this process.

If you have pages on your site now that link to other pages on your site, it will be imperative that you maintain the same directory structure.  Once we make the change over on Feb. 1st, the URL www.ces.purdue.edu/(countyname ) will point to the new server.  You do not need to worry about the new URL http://www2.ces.purdue.edu/ces/(countyname )  as both URL's will point to the same place after the change over.   I'll give an example on this a little later in this document.

  1. Start by creating your directories or "folders" by choosing Create New Folder in the drop down box on the File Management page.

  2. Then type the name of the folder in the box next to Named and press the Create New Folder button.

    1. For example:  I have a directory called ag on my old page.  I want to replicate that on the new template so I type ag in the box and press the Create New Folder button.

  3. Repeat this process for all of your directories.

  4. When you are ready to copy your files to the new folder, simply click on that folder, in our example, ag.

    1. The current working directory is displayed near the top of the page and should now read:  Current Working Directory:  /CES/Countyname/Ag

  5. Next, select Upload New File from the drop down box.

  6. Press the Browse button next to the File To Upload box.

    1. The standard Windows File chooser will open.  Navigate to the location of your files, i.e. your P:/drive if that is where you have them stored.

    2. Select the file that you wish to upload, ( for example P:\Web Files\ag\index.html), and press the Open button.

    3. Press the Upload File button.

  7. Repeat this process for all of your files and directories that you want to be available from your website.

  8. Your file is now available to be linked on the Create Link  page if you wish for it to be Linked on the Left Hand menu of your new template.

  9. Choose A page uploaded through file management under Create a link to:

  10. Select your file from the Drop down box, in our example, /Countyname/Ag/index.html

Now, referring to the URL's that we discussed above on the page.  Once we switch you to the new template, you would be able to view this page by point a web browser to either www.ces.purdue.edu/(countyname)/ag OR http://www2.ces.purdue.edu/CES/(Countyname)/Ag/   Replace (Countyname) with the name of your county.

Since the old URL will point to the new server once we make the switch, either Feb. 1st or upon your request, which ever comes first, any old bookmarks, even to specific pages will continue to work so long as you make sure to replicate you directory, "folder", structure on the new templates.

If you have any further questions or constructive feedback, please send them to cthelp@agad.purdue.edu.
