Definition of Terms
The following are definitions of the terms used related to your IHETS
Internet connectivity and in the
form emailed to county CEDs. These terms are relevant to your IHETS
connectivity.
- Demarc Extension
- Site Survey term: This is where you
want the router to be located physically. If you have a wiring closet then
you'll probably want it located there. Otherwise you will likely want the
router located close to your current ethernet hub.
-
- Director/Manager of Facilities
- Site Survey term: Most likely your
CED. Someone that could authorize something like wiring modifications etc.
-
- Hours of Operation
- Site Survey term: When is your office
open. If your office ever switches from Eastern Standard Time (EST) you will
want to note that too.
-
- Hub
- A hub is used to connect several computers together. The hub is the
place where data comes together and includes a
switch which determines how and where data is forwarded from the
place where data comes together.
A hub network topology consists of a backbone
(main circuit) to which a number of outgoing lines can be attached
("dropped"), each providing one or more connection ports for devices to
attach to.
-
- Router
- A device which forwards packets between networks. The router allows your
office computer to connect to the Internet. A router is located at any
juncture of networks or gateway and
decides which way to send each information packet.
-
- Site Physical Address
- Site Survey term: Where your office is actually located
-
- Technical Site Coordinator
- Site Survey term: This is the
designated technical person in the CES office. This person will serve as
IHETS contact to the office for minor issues. For example, on a rare
occasion IHETS may need to ask this person to do something like power-cycle
the router.
-
- Telco Demarcation
- Site Survey term: This is where the
phone company's lines enter your building. Typically this would be some sort
of punch block and is where the phone line would transition from being the
phone company's responsibility to the building's responsibility.
-
- UPS
- Uninterruptible Power Supply; A battery powered power supply to provide
power to a computer in the event of interruptions or spikes in the incoming
electrical power. Different rating UPSs will provide power for different
lengths of time. UPSs connect to the computer's serial port and use battery
power to allow the computer to shut down gracefully before complete loss of
power.
